چکیده

John C. Holz is an Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in aquatic ecology. He has established an active lake water quality extension program that provides information on common Midwest management issues (e.g., algal control, aquatic weed management, nutrient management) to lake owners, users, and managers. His research interests include the role and interaction of nutrient limitation and herbivory in structuring freshwater plankton communities, surface water quality and management, lake classification methodology, and lake restoration.

Aquatic ecosystem assessment using exergy

The recent work is dedicated to the study of behaviour of exergy and structural exergy in physical models of aquatic ecosystems—mesocosms and microcosms and in Lake Baikal. The results of field experiments with mesocosms on Lake Baikal, containing natural plankton assemblage, and laboratory experiments with microcosms containing Daphnia magna and Chlorella vulgaris demonstrated decrease of the ...

Food webs in lakes—seasonal dynamics and the impact of climate variability

As a result of increased green-house gases, global surface temperatures increased strongly during the twentieth century and will most likely increase between 1.4–5.8 C within the twenty-first century (Houghton et al. 2001). Early signs of climaterelated gradual changes in lake ecosystems have been reported (Schindler et al. 1990; Magnuson et al. 2000; Straile 2002; Livingstone 2003; Straile et ...

Invasive dreissenid mussels and benthic algae in Lake Michigan: characterizing effects on sediment bacterial communities.

Dreissenid mussels have invaded the Laurentian Great Lakes causing dramatic changes to benthic-pelagic interactions. Despite research on food web impacts, there is limited data on mussel effects on benthic bacterial communities. This study examined effects of dreissenid mussels and benthic algae on sediment bacterial community composition and diversity. Triplicate experimental sediment plus lak...

Responses of benthic fish exposed to contaminants in outdoor microcosms--examining the ecological relevance of previous laboratory toxicity tests.

Previous laboratory studies indicate that coal combustion wastes (a mixture composed of fly ash and other lower volume wastes such as bottom ash; hereafter collectively referred to as ash) adversely affect the health of benthic fish (Erimyzon sucetta; lake chubsucker), but fish in these studies were provided with ample uncontaminated food resources. Because aquatic disposal of ash can also adve...

Functional Effects of Parasites on Food Web Properties during the Spring Diatom Bloom in Lake Pavin: A Linear Inverse Modeling Analysis

This study is the first assessment of the quantitative impact of parasitic chytrids on a planktonic food web. We used a carbon-based food web model of Lake Pavin (Massif Central, France) to investigate the effects of chytrids during the spring diatom bloom by developing models with and without chytrids. Linear inverse modelling procedures were employed to estimate undetermined flows in the lake...
